Metso partners with Australian university in grinding applications research

Metso and the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, have finalized a three-year agreement encompassing joint research and performance evaluations of the VERTIMILL® Grinding Mill developed by Metso.

The project supports Metso’s continuing quest to improve the effectiveness of its grinding solutions. The agreement is part of a longstanding relationship between Metso and the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre, known as the JKMRC, at the university’s Sustainable Minerals Institute

The AMIRA "P9" Project - "The Optimisation of Mineral Processes by Modelling and Simulation" - is the world's largest university-based mineral processing research program. From commencement in 1962 under Prof Alban Lynch, it has re-shaped the practice of designing and optimising mineral processing plants; using mathematical modelling and computer simulation. The research team includes some of the world's leading researchers in key disciplines of mineral processing. 

Former PNG Prime Minister visits the JK Centre

On Friday 23 September 2011, the Director of the JKMRC Professor Geoff Gault hosted a visit to the JK Centre by Sir Rabbie Namaliu, a former Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea. The Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade sponsored the visit, with the primary purpose being Sir Rabbie delivering the inaugural PNG Independence Day address at Australia’s Parliament House in Canberra on 20 September 2011.

The 10th International Congress for Applied Mineralogy was held in Trondheim from 1 – 5th August, also marking the 30 year history of ICAM. The previous meeting had been held in Brisbane in Sept 2008 and was an unprecedented success with over 200 people attending and some exciting and controversial papers.

Queensland Flood Disaster – Impact on the JK Centre

As many will be aware, Queensland has, in the last three weeks, experienced major flooding across 75% of the state. Brisbane has also been severely affected with 11,900 homes and 2,500 businesses completely flooded and 14,700 homes and 2,500 businesses partially flooded.

Late last year, the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) was awarded the fourth international Rio Tinto Research Centre of Excellence - The Centre for Advanced Mineral Sorting (CAMS), which is located at and fully integrated into the JKMRC.
